With the help of some tasty soup and fine music performed by students from Tromsø Music Conservatory, Jan-Gunnar Winther, the director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, will discuss Arctic temperatures and world climate change.
There is nowhere in the world that has been more dramatically effected by climate change than the Arctic. In recent years the icebergs have melted, arctic icesheets have receeded northwards, unfamiliar species of fish have popped up, and the habitat of the polar bear has come increasingly under threat. The Arctic is changing faster now than at any time during the last 1450 years (UN´s climate panel, 2013). Director Jan-Gunnar Winther invites us to reflect for a brief hour upon global warming in the north and its impact upon climate and weather across the globe.
Winther asserts that these northern changes have consequences for farmers in the USA and city planners in China. Climate models appear to indicate that we are merely entering an initial phase. If the emission of greenhouse gasses continues at this pace, temperatures in the Arctic will increase by between 8 and 10 degrees. Even half such an increase would dramatically transform the region from how it is today.
These challenging and important thoughts about nature and mileau will be accompanied by music performed and sung by Johanne Ballovarre and band who studied at the Tromsø Music Conservatory. The Arts Festival of North Norway is delighted with our cooperation with the conservatory and with Tromsø University in 2015.
Johanne Ballovarre from Nord-Troms has had tremendous success at events such as by:larm Stavanger 2005, Tromsø 2006, Riddu Riđđu 2005, Bukta 2005, Blåfrostfestivalen 2005, Mandela kick-off 2005, and stepped in to replace Ane Brun in the song "Lift me" with Madrugada. Johanne is highly versatile, crossing effortlessly from Indie to pop and jazz.
- She placed a stool on stage at the Kaos club with a classical guitar on her lap – and sang with a voice that could have stemmed from the lungs of a heavenly angel. Her name? Tromsø´s new vocal comet Johanne Ballovarre, Nordlys.
In addition to music we offer delicious soup from the Studentsamskipnadens canteen made from Umami´s recipes. Make a note that the soup comes included with the ticket!
The performance ”Å være nord” by by masters student Maja Skogstad from the Higher Education College of Oslo and Akershus will take place aboard the ship Anna Rogde moored across from Ludo. This performance opens one hour before, and one hour after Soup at Ludo on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
