Om Festspillene i Nord-Norge

Festspillene i Nord-Norge was first held in Harstad in 1965. During the summer solstice in June each year, we organize an 8-day international arts festival, dedicated to music, theater, dance and performing arts. With its location at 68° north, the festival is firmly rooted in and based in the north, where we facilitate and highlight creative processes, artistic exchange and local unity.

We care about our audience and we are dedicated to reflecting our surroundings. We encourage artistic cross-pollination, celebrate the diversity of our local community and continuously work for the artists in our region while being curious about processes and practices from other parts of the world.

With the goal of stimulating local art and culture, we create opportunities where artists can think big and take risks! Through our Young Artists Grant and Open Call funding, we award support for creative performance-based projects that challenge the boundaries of artistic expression through exciting collaborations and mentoring support. We also organize the annual youth festival NUK-NyUngKunst, a project-based festival where participants meet across functional abilities as part of the Northern Norway Festival.

The Northern Norway Festival is made possible with funding from the Arts Council of Norway, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark counties, as well as Harstad Municipality. Funding for international cooperation comes from the Nordic Council, Creative Europe, and international cultural institutions. From 1995 to 2015, the Festival was a "knutepunkt" festival.
