The sheer mystery, power and fathomless enigma that is Russia wrapped up in one programme. An evening guaranteed to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Sheer power and precision from The Armed Force's Band North and Russian hornist Arkady Shilkloper. One master from the east and twenty-nine maestros hailing from Harstad. This will literally be a blast.
In 2013 Arkady Shilkloper met the Forsvarets Musikkorps Nord-Norge for the first time, a meeting which quickly led to further collaborations in Finnmark and Murmansk. But at this year´s Arts Festival of North Norway they are going to take the collaboration much further.
It´s said that Arkady Shilkloper is an almost reckless virtuoso taking the French Horn to dimensions hitherto untold. His virtuosity flies high without a safety net and at a speed that traffic police might take umbrage to!
The story began in Moscow in 1956, and at the tender age of six the young Arkady began to play althorn with the Young Pioneers Orchestra (Komsomol´skie). Soon afterwards he became a cadet at the Moscow Military Music School, and studied horn at the Gnessin Academy of Music. Alongside his studies he also took an avid interest in jazz. For many years Shilkloper was the solo-hornist in the Bolshoi Opera Orchestra and with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, but he is now a full-time freelance musician.
Arkady Shilkloper is hardly unknown in Norway, and is already celebrated for his collaboration with the Ukrainian jazz pianist and composer Misha Alperin.
We are very proud that FMKN - Forsvarets Musikkorps Nord-Norge – is our sister organisation and we have been joined at the hip since the beginning. It might very well be said that without FMKN there would be no Arts Festival of North Norway. FMKN are breathtakingly versatile. They are equally at home cutting loose with some Frank Sinatra as they are performing the most complex freshly commissioned contemporary music. If the national radio orchestra KORK speak for the nation; then FMKN certainly are the voice of northern Norway. And, long may it continue.
NB. We draw attention to our discount theme based packages. Tickets for Arkady Shilkloper/FMKN are included in "From Russia with love".
