A thrilling musical meeting between belgian jazz/rock/fusion-trio SLANG and renowned, indian sitar guru Purbayan Chatterjee, the ”sitar´s Jimi Hendrix”. A combo with four musicians testing the boundaries of musical expression with infectious energy.
Purbayan Chatterjee is a virtuoso of the sitar, who at the tender age of 15 was crowned India´s "best instrumentalist" in the field of indian classical music. In addition to classical indian music he loves exploring trends from other cultures. To witness him playing the electric sitar equipped with pedalboard is akin to watching an Indian Jimmy Hendrix. Musical greats such as Chick Corea and Pat Metheny are fans, and Purbayan has performed numerous times with the great tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Slang is a long established, prize winning belgian fusion group consisting of François Garny (bass), Manuel Hermia (saxophone and flutes) and Michel Seba (drums and percussion). They describe their music as "etno-Coltrane-rock", and the trio has a goal of never allowing themselves to be limited by established boundaries between musical genres. Their compositions are inspired by music from across the world, and they seek to paint a musical picture which reflects how people experience the world today; as multi-cultural and diverse.
In the Autumn of 2013 the trio invited Purbayan to join them for the first time.
This year they release their first album: ”Pace of mind”.
– This is an album I can highly recommend for its fine fusion of rock, jazz and Indian music, Peter Slavid, Londonjazznews.com
Slang´s frontman, Manuel Hermia is a fabulous saxophonist and flautist, who is also involved in other musical projects where he brings contrasting cultures together, such as the trio Majid Bekkas, who draw much of their inspiration from african music.
