Meeting point: Harstad Kulturhus
How did a small coastal settlement become the third-largest town in Northern Norway? On this city walk, you are invited out into the streets to see Harstad with fresh eyes – from its town status in 1904 to the town we know today.
We follow the traces of those who dared to invest: entrepreneurs with grand visions, architects with a sense of form and function, and developers who believed in the future. But this is also the story of everyone else – the people who lived their everyday lives here, who worked, built, dreamed and created community.

Along the way, we stop at key places in the townscape. Here, you will hear stories of hardship and hope, of small and large turning points, and of how the sea has always been a powerful presence in the life of the town. The walk offers both historical perspectives and space for reflection: What has this development meant for those who lived here before us – and for those of us who live here now?
With Mona Høydahl from Sør-Troms Museum as your guide, history becomes vivid and tangible. This is an accessible and engaging introduction to the town’s past, whether you are new to Harstad, visiting, or have roots here.
This city walk is for you if you:
- are curious about Harstad’s history and development
- enjoy city walks with lively storytelling
- want to experience the town in a new and more personal way
