Aslak Heika Hætta Bjørn has an impressive CV as a writer, musician, activist, critic and politician, among other roles. His work intersects with many corners of society, something that also shapes his writing. In "Vrengte kofter", he gives voice to experiences rooted both in personal life and in political engagement.
Anger, resistance and Sámi identity
In the book, Hætta Bjørn explores anger and resistance in encounters with the Norwegian majority society – a society that, historically, has attempted to render Sámi identity invisible. Turning one’s gákti inside out is a Sámi symbol of political dissent and contempt, and this image stands at the centre of the book. Vrengte kofter is about resistance, but also about a personal journey to reclaim one’s place within Sámi language and culture.
Barriers that still remain
The book also addresses the obstacles that the majority society continues to place in the way of those who wish to rediscover or strengthen their Sámi identity. The author talk offers the audience an opportunity to engage more closely with both the book and the experiences behind it, and opens up space for reflection on Sámi belonging today.
The conversation is moderated by Anita Overelv, Producer and Festival Director at Hamsunsenteret.
