New original, vocal jazz on the boundary of pop, spiced up with tango nuevo and the mystique of the arctic tundra. A jurist with a rare and powerful voice and a dream band from the land of the northern lights.
Marie Vangen has a varm and intimate voice which ranges from the fragile to the powerful. A rare gift for story telling and strong songs from her own pen make Marie Vangen one of the most exciting artists working in northern Norway in 2016.
On the 29th of January Vangen released her first single on Finito Bacalao Records. ”Mother Song” is a beautiful tale about strength in the face of longing, and of mothers´ love across the generations. Raw nerve and committed performance bear witness to a story that is intensely personal, and the single has been a resounding success. In the lead up to the Arctic Arts Festival she releases her debut-EP, ”First Four”.
When one experiences Marie Vangen on the stage it is not difficult to understand why she dedicated the first part of her adult life to a career in the law, and as a judge with a doctoral stipend in criminal law! Marie Vangen´s vocal style shines forth as intimate, engaging and direct, and we invite our public into a warm, melodic universe where she takes up her place in a star line-up. With several of the most celebrated musicians in Norway today, known from among others the Mari Boine Band, Vamp and the Jonas Fjeld Band, the experience is wrapped up in an exquisite and enthralling musical package. The music conjures up associations with artists such as Kari Bremnes, Sting and Sidsel Endresen and is characterised by strong and personal lyrics filled with both humour and weight.
On the 20th of February Vangen took a packed Tromsø Kulturhus by storm. Now she takes her ensemble along to the Arctic Arts Festival and afterwards to leading festivals around northern Norway.
Even though the law has been the main focus of Vangen´s life, she has toured with the pianist Eivind Valnes in northern Russia, around northern Norway; her name becoming increasingly familiar. She has performed at Barentsjazz, Nordlysfestivalen, Varangerfestivalen, Bodø Jazz Open 2015 and Grenseløsfestivalen, and she has given various concerts in Arkangelsk and Murmansk with, amongst others the Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra.
