A stunning world premiere from the contemporary music ensemble The Arctic Sinfonietta! ”Antarctica” is an interactive, innovative, multimedia work with music composed by the Icelandic/German composer Steíngrimur Rohloff, who has become renowned for his cutting edge electronic compositions.
”Antarctica” is around half an hour in duration and brings together a rich constellation of both aural and visual elements. Live music is placed alongside electronic sounds. Video images merge together with the music as a form of strong rhythmic punctuation. The Arctic Sinfonietta reinvent the large space within Harstad Kirke and transform the location visually.
The Arctic Sinfonietta, the most northerly sinfonietta of its kind in the world, continually pushes the boundaries.
The goal of the group is to raise the profile of contemporary music in the two most northerly regions, whilst taking up Tromsø as a base for operations. The ensemble consists of professional musicians connected with various institutions up north. The musicians are blessed with an idealism and burning enthusiasm for modern art music which is keenly shared. The group has not been around for long but will soon celebrate it´s five year anniversary on the 1st of May 2016. They performed at the Nordlys Festival´s opening concert with Kaja Bremnes and Moddi and opened Barents Spektakel in February. The ensemble was also invited to Germany to perform at Nordliche Klang outside Berlin and is invited to the international new music festival "Sound Ways" in St. Petersburg in November, where they will play in the grand hall of the world renowned St. Petersburg Philharmonic. The Arctic Sinfonietta presents the latest trends in international new music, vis á vis a flexible organisation of around 14 musicians.
The composer Steíngrimur Rohloff was recently awarded a prestigious Danish award for his chamber opera «Babel». Itself a Danish commission. Various other works have recieved notable awards. Rohloff first came to international attention after winning the Bernd-Alois-Zimmermann prize in Cologne in Germany in 2003 for several orchestral works, which the jury praised for their originality and exceptional technical prowess. Works by Steíngrimur have been performed in 25 countries across the world.
