Probably one of the greatest voices you have never heard! Maybe you can´t catch the words, but this heartfelt music bears a universal message. Esma Redžepova, The Gipsy Queen, is a world renowned Macedonian singer worshipped for her artistry.
Many singers disappear on the back of a one-hit wonder; one album at best and then their gone. Precious few remain in the limelight for generations. Esma Redžepova can look back upon a glorious career lasting over half a century. Her first breakthrough came in the 1950´s. She is celebrated for her strong and passionate voice. When asked how she has managed to keep her voice so powerful for so long, she answers that avoiding fizzy drinks and romantic relationships has certainly helped.
Esma Redžepova has an enormous repertoire of songs, which she has largely written the music to herself.
Her love of music began when she was 11 years old. During her formative years in Skopje she was already fascinated by folk tunes. She shot to stardom in 1956 when she appeared on Macedonian radio in a talent programme. This was the first time gypsy music had been broadcast on national radio. Since then she has travelled all over the world and given over 20.000 concerts, including visits to Norway. She has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for championing the Romany people, most recently in 2003. She adopted 47 children, gave them a home, and filled their lives with music. In 2005 she was awarded the Norwegian Bjørnsonprisen for "contributions to the Romany people´s culture and for humanitarian work for children".
