The world premiere of a freshly written Samí music theatre work by the actress Sarakka Gaup and Festival Profile Artist Georg Buljo. Follow the Samí girl Marja on a fairytale journey beneath the earth.
Grasp this opportunity to experience new Samí theatre for children. The newly composed "Marja and the Belly Dragon" is amongst other things based upon traditional joik.
In this thrilling tale we meet our heroine as she discovers a huge ball and suddenly gains the gift of speaking with animals. A magic canary-raven twitters away to her and tells her that the ball is the centre of the earth. Here dwells the Belly Dragon who guards the ball whilst holding the world together.
Marja resolves to go there in the hope that she too can hold the world together. The journey is long and she meets a number of challenges on the way. A magic joik must be mastered and a fairytale begins to unfold around the girl. The public will hear both the magic joik and the potent words the girl uses in order to befriend the Belly Dragon.
The performance brings our Festival Artist Georg Buljo´s series of appearances to a close. The musician, singer, composer and producer was crowned "Samí Artist of the Year" last year, and also was awarded the festival´s tour stipend together with fiddler Ragnhild Furebotten.
In this performance Buljo collaborates with the young and gifted actress Sarakka Gaup who hails from Kautokeino and Oslo. Gaup was presented in 2013 as Young Samí Artist of the Year at the indigenous folk festival Riddu Riddu. She has worked with The Samí National Theatre - Beaivváš, and has participated in the Young Author´s Stage and in the project "Samí Songs of the Road/ SámiOfelaččat".
The performance is in Norwegian with selected tracts in Samí.
