As a participant in this workshop, you can work with several of the following:
- moving to music in different ways
- learning basic skills in breaking, hip hop, contemporary dance and/or jazz dance
- dancing freestyle/improvised
- drawing on different dance styles
- helping create choreography
- finding your own completely unique dance style and dancing to varied, catchy music
- creating a small showing and performing with the rest of the dance group as part of the full NUK showing
The workshop is led by a team of experienced instructors who will give you different tasks, inspire you and guide you throughout the week.
Dance style
In this workshop, we work across genres, taking hip hop and contemporary dance as our starting point. You can choose whether you want to focus mainly on hip hop, contemporary dance or both. In some sessions, the group will be divided by genre, while at other times everyone will work together as a full group, experimenting with mixing genres and dancing to different kinds of music.
The instructors have backgrounds in breaking, hip hop, contemporary dance and jazz dance. You will work partly with step-based choreography, but you will also be given tasks that allow you to explore different ways of moving, and tools for trying out freestyle and improvisation in dance. Whatever dance style you come from, you can integrate your own way of moving into this approach. The main focus is on being creative, playful and finding the joy of dancing within yourself.

A powerful, creative community – rooted in the values of hip hop culture
By the end of the week, you will not only have gained new skills, but also experienced a strong sense of community. You will have expressed your emotions in different ways, and felt how hip hop and dance culture include everyone, support everyone and celebrate each person’s individual expression.
In hip hop culture, the aim is not to become the same as one another, but to bring out what is unique and special in each of us. You will gain a deeper understanding of hip hop culture’s roots and values, and of its power as a driving force for positive change – for us as individuals and for the society we live in. Here, we will build confidence, grow as people and experience the power of community and collaboration.
Level
Everyone will be given tasks suited to their own experience and skill level, so the workshop is suitable whether you have no experience, some experience or lots of experience with dance. The instructors’ main focus is to build a safe and inclusive atmosphere for everyone, where everyone can develop. The workshop is also well adapted for dancers both with and without functional variations. You can write about your experience in the application form.
We will work with elements from hip hop, contemporary dance and other styles – and experiment with mixing genres.
