Vokal Nord comes to the Festival with a unique performance made up of newly written, Sami-inspired choral music and a graceful selection of baroque pieces.
Vokal Nord is a chamber choir based in Tromsø, and is described as one of Norway's leading vocal ensembles. The choir combines classic choral sound with voice use associated with ethnic music from the northern regions. At concerts with Vokal Nord, you can hear sharp and special sounds inspired by joik, overtone singing and kveding.
Back to the Festival
The choir has been working with Sami-inspired music since the production of "Sami romances" - a memorial concert for Nils-Aslak Valkeapää - premiered during Festspillene i Nord-Norge in 2002. Since then, the ensemble has had a long journey with studies of various foreign singing techniques, commissioned works from local and international composers and performing concerts with the material.
Contrast
Sávri means "tough, persistent" in Northern Sami, and the performance of the same name is a summary of this journey. The mix of modern, Sami-inspired choral music and repertoire from the Baroque is something the ensemble has been working with for several years. The two styles complement and drive each other further, and the baroque program is a striking contrast to the completely new pieces. In other words, everything is in place for a rather unique concert experience, which also includes percussion, organ and saxophone.
