Sondre Närva Pettersen is accompanied by a group of renowned musicians and artists with roots in Norwegian, Sami, and South Korean cultures as he presents "Šlobboten," a boundary-crossing mix of Sea Sami culture, Nordic jazz, joik, Sami hymn tones, personal interviews, electronic textures, and grand video art.
The concert by the Norwegian-Sami musician and composer Sondre Närva Pettersen is based on interviews from his family area in Moskavuotna/Ullsfjorden – a Sea Sami core area in North Troms, where almost everyone spoke Sami at the start of the 1900s.
Around 1950, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission considers the Sami language in the area to be virtually extinct. Can this really be true? Is it possible for a deep culture to die out in 50 years; or has the culture been reshaped, been given Norwegian names, and become part of "Norwegian" traditions? Over two years, Pettersen has undertaken extensive work to collect stories about identity, Sea Sami culture, music, and conversations with people in the area to investigate the situation. The concert aims to contribute to the living Sea Sami culture in dialogue with jazz, electronic soundscapes, and video art featuring close-ups of people and nature in Ullsfjorden.
With fragments of Sea Sami dialect words, joik melodies, stories of Norwegianization, and reflections on the relationship between humans and nature, this is presented in a concert format that fascinated the audience when he presented a preview during Culture Night 2023.
Sondre Närva Pettersen is a Sea Sami/Norwegian musician/composer with Kven roots.
He has a bachelor's in jazz vocals from the Jazz Department in Trondheim, a master's in joik and sustainability from the University of Bergen and Nord University (with Frode Fjellheim as a supervisor), and experience as a university lecturer in jazz and music technology at both the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Grieg Academy.
Pettersen is also known for his work in Norwegian performing arts at, among others, Hålogaland Theatre, the National Touring Theatre, and Trøndelag Theatre.
