Within the participatory performance format that Blodklubb series embodies, a national celebration is created with personal stories, blood club dance, ritualized combat, and competitions. In this Blodklubb meeting, the audience gets the opportunity to release aggression, adrenaline, and, most importantly, laughter within the framework of the performing arts' alternative reality.
Our conflicted relationship with culture and genetics is the starting point for the Blodklubb performance series. One of the focal points is the Sámi cultural heritage, another is the artists' genetic heritage. In an unpredictable mix of humor and deep seriousness, Blodklubb addresses themes such as belonging, community, cultural heritage, and cultural future. Each meeting is a unique performance with new themes.
The four founders of Blodklubb all have deep roots in the north and represent four northern Norwegian archetypes:
- The Sámi activist: Sigbjørn Skåden
- The victim of Norwegianization: Bernt Bjørn
- The bearer of Norwegian guilt: Kristin Bjørn
- The neutral, Finnish researcher: Kristina Junttila
Critics have praised Blodklubb for its experimental and playful approach to performing arts as a social arena. Espen Johansen from the online magazine Hakapik describes the experience as "a loving commotion" where the boundaries between art and life are blurred, emphasizing the performance's ability to address complex issues in a non-preaching manner.
Blodklubb is an experience that challenges, touches, and inspires. Through an in-depth collaboration between talented artists, Blodklubb invites the audience to reflect on their own identity and place in an ever-changing cultural landscape.
