The Arctic Arts Festival is proud to present the world premiere of a frosty arctic version of the classic Carmen. What happens when the sizzling gypsy girl Carmen is confronted by the frozen north? This account blends together a unique interpretation with dance portrayed by the dance company Norrdans and choreographed by Jo Strømgren.
In this world premiere Norrland´s dance company Norrdans and our very own Jo Strømgren join forces in a powerful evening which will fill the stage with deep thoughts and humorous tableaux. Strømgren´s initial idea starts within a Nordic reference point, - namely, what it is like to live so far north from the capital. Is it dull, grinding and lonely, or is it laden with wild temperamental feelings? Can life in the frozen north bear even more vitality than even Andalucia…?
- We are proud to have landed Sweden´s most northern dance company for the Arctic Arts Festival for the first time! The company fits perfectly in with the festival´s northern focus, which made it natural for us to showcase this greatly respected dance company and cherished institution in the northern artistic landscape, states Arctic Arts Festival director Maria Utsi.
With Jo Strømgren as choreographer, you can expect a very special production; intense, colourful and sexy with a good dash of humour. Strømgren has collaborated a number of times with Norrdans and Carmen (one of the world´s most loved operas) will be the fifth collaboration since 1998.
The dance company Norrdans is renowned for its presentations of contemporary dance of the highest quality. The company recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary in fine style with ever increasing recognition in the dance scene the world over. The Härnösand based troupe recently auditioned new dancers for the 2016-2017 season and recieved a record number of applicants from across the globe.
