A variety of drums are placed around an irrigation sprinkler in Svalbard Parken. Each drum is crafted from scrapwood, rainwear-textile and ratchet straps. As they are played by the mechanical sprinkler, the drums form a small orchestra. During the festival, the orchestra may be joined by raindrops, continuously redefining the rhythms and patterns emitted from the work.
With this piece I would like to activate the public space of Svalbard Parken through sound and irrigation and invite everyone to play along!
Niels Nielsen (b.1992 in Denmark) is a designer and visual artist who lives and works in Tromsø. His works are often created in dialogue with their intended destinations, and as such built upon the attributes, elements and legacies already present in the site of exhibition. Niels is interested in the interrogation of ‘everyday propaganda’ and finds most of his conceptual foundation through emerging himself if in different informational infrastructures and wondering how they influence his thinking and practice. The nature of his works are often composed of multiple mediums including webdesign, installation, printmaking and soundwork.
Niels recently graduated from the Art Academy in Tromsø with an MA in Fine Art. He holds a BA from Design Academy Eindhoven (Eindhoven, The Netherlands).
Prosjektet er et av fem stipendprosjekter delt ut av UiT Norges arktiske universitet, som en del av et strategisk samarbeid mellom Festspillene i Nord-Norge og UiT Norges arktiske universitet.

The project is one of five grant projects awarded by UiT Norway's Arctic University, as part of a strategic collaboration between the Festivals in Northern Norway and UiT Norway's Arctic University.
About the collaboration
- As the only institution in the region, UiT trains artists and musicians for a variety of roles and tasks in cultural life.
The collaboration with the Festivals in Northern Norway is a highly relevant practice arena and an important point of contact with the professional field our students aim for, but above all a platform where they can present their own projects to both festival audiences and other festival actors.
The scholarship scheme has received a good response from the students, and we look forward to further developing the collaboration with FiNN in the coming years, says Solmund Nystabakk, deputy director for education at UiT.
