What happens when traditional dance and music from Norway, Austria and Estonia meet in the same room? Village Party is a collaboration between Kartellet, Simon Mayer/Art in Motion and Johanna-Adele Jüssi – three artistic forces who all work with folk traditions, physical play and audiences as co-creators.
The performance takes the forms and stereotypes of the village party as its starting point. Rhythm, competition, rituals and play are set in motion, and old movements and games are given new life. Traditional dance and folk music form the basis, but the expression opens up to the absurd, the unexpected and the physically demanding.
Playful and unpretentious
Interactivity is a central part of the work. Audiences are invited into rhythmic and physical situations based on trust and togetherness. At the same time, there is room simply to observe. The performance moves between the virtuosic and the social, between structure and spontaneity.
Village Party highlights the playful and unpretentious as artistic material – reminding us that movement, play and community still have a place in contemporary art.
